Regular readers of my blog posts know that I rarely know what my topic is going to be when I start writing. Generally, a thought (or half a thought) comes to me, and I start writing, following the thread that is spinning out, following it from one idea to another.
Inspiration and ideas arise that say, include this or that quote – from the I Ching, or the Tao Te Ching, or the Bible, or some other spiritual source. Or an experience I’ve had, or a story I remember that relates to the topic.
From time to time, I start down a path but it soon becomes clear that it doesn’t fit. It’s too forced. Sometimes I think of something later, something I wish I had included.
Oh well…. I trust the process that seems to come from somewhere that both is Johnny – but is more than Johnny. I feel that this way of writing helps me to bypass the ego and access the subconscious mind. I don't know what's best, but IT does!
Recently, I had a session with a hypnotist who practices Quantum Healing Hypnosis Therapy(QHHT). Corinne Puget studied the QHHT technique with the daughter of the founder of this method, Delores Cannon. Mme. Puget and I met and had a session that lasted a good five hours!
From the website (emphasis added):
QHHT® achieves the deepest level of hypnosis possible, the Somnambulistic level of trance…. Dolores Cannon began her research of sacred knowledge and reincarnation nearly 50 years ago by fine-tuning her QHHT® method of hypnosis…. creating a safe and effective method that bypasses the chatter of the conscious mind….
There are many ways to bypass the chatter of the conscious mind but none that I have experienced that were as deep as this. The encounter was very profound. I believe I have been healed on a fundamental level. It feels as if some serious childhood and past life traumas have been addressed.
The hypnotic experience was clear and intense; I have done things like this before with other therapists, but I never genuinely been this deep into the subconsciousness. The echoes of this experience will reverberate for a very long time.
The whole idea of bypassing the ego and tapping into the subconscious – and the wisdom that lies within – is a constant theme, and a fundamental goal, of most (all?) spiritual paths. Quieting the monkey mind, the Buddhist concept describing our restless, capricious minds and our inability to control our thoughts, is the way to a life of peace, presence and power.
Lesson 106 of A Course in Miracles starts this way:
Let me be still and listen to the truth.
If you will lay aside the ego’s voice, however loudly it may seem to call; if you will not accept its petty gifts that give you nothing that you really want; if you will listen with an open mind, that has not told you what salvation is; then you will hear the mighty Voice of truth, quiet in power, strong in stillness, and completely certain in Its messages.
Our ego knows only a little. Its self-centeredness and fear keeps it from exploring larger truths, creative answers, easier, softer pathways. It is the way of rigidity and narrow-minded thinking.
“Wrong and strong,” as a work colleague used to say of another colleague who always seemed to be pitted against….. well, everyone and everything.
Biblical sayings on this topic are many and profound as regards the need to surrender to a Higher Intelligence:
Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened,
\and I will give you rest.
Take my yoke upon you and learn from me,
for I am gentle and humble in heart,
and you will find rest for your souls.
For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.
Matthew 11:28-30
Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding;in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.
Proverbs 3:5-6
I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace
In this world you will have trouble.
But take heart! I have overcome the world.
John 16:33
You get the idea. “I have overcome the world,” means I (Higher Self) have overcome the ego’s way of seeing and doing things. I am leaning, not on my own small-minded thinking, but am surrendering that ineffective, constricted way of thinking (and being), to a broad, easy and effective intelligence that knows the big picture!
The Tao Te Ching likewise talks a lot about the advantages of softening our edges, letting go of our need to control, to be right, to take charge and give everything over to the flow of the Tao, which keeps Heaven and earth in perfect order.
“Stop thinking and end your problems.
What difference between yes and no?
What difference between success and failure?
Tao Te Ching Poem # 20
"The Tao is the empty space inside of a vessel,
It can be used but never used up
How deep it is!It dulls all sharpness,Unravels all entanglements,
Softens all brightness,
And mingles with the mundane.
Tao Te Ching Poem # 4
Can you coax your mind from its wandering and keep to the original oneness? Can you let your body become supple as a newborn child's? Can you cleanse your inner vision until you see nothing but the light? Can you love people and lead them without imposing your will? Can you deal with the most vital matters by letting events take their course? Can you step back from you own mind and thus understand all things? Giving birth and nourishing, having without possessing, acting with no expectations, leading and not trying to control: this is the supreme virtue.
Poem # 10 - Translated by Stephen Mitchell, 1988,
Poem 10 of the Tao Te Ching is certainly one of my favorites. And not because 10 is my very lucky number! It’s because it encapsulates the sublime, subtle and powerfully effective ideas behind the Tao: letting go and letting (trusting) God/the Tao/the Higher Self/the Universe/Spirit run the show, run our lives, direct our thoughts, our actions.
In alignment with “a higher order of beings” as Henry David Thoreau says, our life flows. “Mistakes” become opportunities. “Setbacks” become doors that open us up to new directions. Challenges become learning laboratories. We have more freedom and more joy!
If one advances confidently in the direction of his dreams,
and endeavors to live the life which he has imagined,
he will meet with a success unexpected in common hours.
He will put some things behind, will pass an invisible boundary;
new, universal, and more liberal laws will begin to establish themselves around and within him; or the old laws be expanded,
and interpreted in his favor in a more liberal sense,
and he will live with the license of a higher order of beings.
-- Thoreau, Walden (emphasis added)
He will put some things behind…. refers to the old ways, the old ideas, the old beliefs. The old laws won’t apply or they will be expanded in a more generous sense.
We are constantly challenged by life, by fate, by our own humanness, to try again, think a new thought, test out a new way of handling an old problem. We cannot have a new life with our old thinking. Or as the Bible says:
Neither do people pour new wine into old wineskins.
If they do, the skins will burst; the wine will run out
and the wineskins will be ruined.
No, they pour new wine into new wineskins, and both are preserved.
Matthew 9:17
We cannot graft new ideas onto an old consciousness. It just doesn’t work. New ideas must be held in a new consciousness.
When we do what is necessary to bypass the ego and trust that what lies behind it is good, is loving, has our best interests at heart and It will give us all that we need to succeed beyond our wildest dreams, then we are well on our way to the “life of our dreams.”
Accessing the subconscious allows us to access the wisdom of the Universe, Ralph Waldo Emerson’sOversoul, the Collective Unconsciousness of Carl Jung or simply our Highest Self, that sees the big picture, has the answers, cares for us in a gentle, loving, infinite and unconditional way.
Whether its through mediation, hypnosis, chanting, yoga, running, or other methods, we can get out of our heads and get into the vastness of Divine Intelligence, full of wisdom, love and joy.
Enjoy your journey!
